there is very little affordable off campus housing. i lived in a
building with wolf spiders, rats and bad plumbing until the county
health department cited my landlord for the poor living conditions in
that complex. until then my landlord refused to listen to my complaints
and instead told me that i was a lousy housekeeper
the citizens of the community all treated cmu students as if all they
were there to do was party, gamble at the casino and generally be
irresponsible. the community was happy to rent housing to us but they
often had the attitude that all any student was there to do was be
distructive.
being a rural community that had a casino there was only fast food
places, and extremly expensive restaurants nothing in between. being a
rural county the quality of life (city versus rural community) was quite
a shock.
most college students would spend their weekends at the local wal mart
using that store as a meeting and dating place. most high school kids
would be there imitating what the college kids did.
affordable housing was almost non existant and there were waiting lists
for apartments that sometimes were 3 years long. if you rented an
apartment or room in a local's home more than likely you knew the family
or knew someone that had rented from the family before or your parents
lived with that family when they were going to college.
the buildings on campus were over 100 years old, the residence halls
were condemned and no new housing was in the plans for future students.
you were required to live on campus if you were between the ages of 18
and 21 and lived more than 25 miles from campus and then after one year
of living on campus you could live on your own or in the dorms.
finding housing was one of the main reasons students left cmu.
the townpeople did not like college students even the over 30 college
kids.
it is a safe community because the residents will call the police if you
are making too much noise. the police will put you in jail until you
can produce your parents credit card so that you can bail yourself out.
