I don't believe there are any fraternities or sororities at Caltech (at
least, there weren't when I attended), but the student houses function
somewhat the same way. Students and houses choose each other at the
start of freshman year, and most students stay with the same house until
they leave. The houses are small (<100 to <200 students), and even
students living off-campus typically remain a member of their house.
The dating scene is pretty strange at a school with 4 or 5 times as many
guys as girls.
Pasadena has lots of interesting things going on, and all of Los Angeles
is nearby, but without a car you'll have a tough time getting to most of
it. As a result, "student favorites" tend to be "whatever's within
walking distance". Since California's drinking age is 21, most
undergraduates aren't going to be able to get into most bars. When I was
there, most partying was done on-campus, reinforcing the "small town"
feel. I don't think the administration is as relaxed about on-campus
partying as they were when I was there, but I don't know.
