At Caltech you'll meet people who end up being very influential in many
scientific and technical fields. It doesn't produce the kind of "good old boy"
network that someplace like USC does, but when you meet a fellow Techer, their
first assumption is that you're as bright and motivated as they are, which tends
to give you a leg up in situations like job hunting.
The SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship) program is supposed to be
very good (I didn't participate, but friends did), especially if you plan to go
to grad school in the sciences.
