Providence is a wonderful city--one of the best of its size in terms of
amenities. Lots of good restaurants in various price ranges. One
called Angelo's (over on Federal Hill in the Italian District--take the
trolley from campus to get there) was popular for big groups because
it's cheap, cheap, cheap. There are several good theatre companies (the
best, in my view is the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre, which recently
moved from Providence to Pawtucket, but it's worth the trip), most of
which have student prices. There's now a first-run mainstream movie
theatre (there wasn't when I was there) in the "new" (four or five years
old) Providence Place Mall--which, as malls go, is very nice--and there
are two arthouse movie theatres quite close to campus. The Avon usually
gets stuff first, but the Cable Car has more character. Concerts also
come through, from smoky-club type stuff to the big arena concerts.
I don't know much about the bar scene. On campus, there are two. I
think you have to be over 21 to go into one of them (the Grad Center
Bar), and the other (the Underground, the more undergrad-ish of the two)
maybe has some 18-and-over nights and some 21-and-over nights; not
sure.
Dating? Not so much. There were couples, and there were single folks,
and no one, even the folks who were in couples, was ever quite sure how
to make the transition. It just sort of happened. Or didn't. ;-)
There are fraternities and sororities, and most weekends have a frat
party or two, but Greek life doesn't dominate social life the way it
does at some places. Day-to-day social life usually centered around the
snack bars--that's where you'd go to meet your friends, see and be seen,
etc. Weekends, you might go to a frat party or a play or concert (a
cappella concerts are a big thing, particularly among first- and second-
year students) or a movie.
