Brown has great social life because of the students. Brown's students
are themselves very social people, believe it or not. The events on
campus I liked the most were people's more private affairs, where they
only invited their friends. But there are almost always many parties each
weekend. I still say if you want that, save your money, then go to New
York and do it right!
There is a healthy bar scene. By far the best bar on campus is the
Graduate Center Bar (GCB), but it cards ferociously. Really no one gets
in until they've turned 21.The Underground is the other campus bar, with
a good vibe, but it gets into trouble regularly for serving to minors.
Otherwise, there are enough bars in the immediate Providence area to
keep students with fake ID's happy.
Providence restaurants are pumped full of great chiefs by the Jhonson &
Whales culinary school. As a result, there is a surprising variety of
excellent but pricey restaurants. (That's okay though. Roughly four out
of five Brown students is far too wealthy to notice. No joke. Had to
put this in somewhere.) My favorite restaurant is Kabob 'N' Curry. Its
Indian, its tasty, and its not too expensive. Other student favorites
are Paragon, which always has very good food at reasonable prices, and
The Meeting Street Cafe, which serves great diner sandwiches in portions
fit for NFL Offensive Line Men, seriously.
There are too many events to list here. One of the things I missed out
on were all the different events we hold on campus all the time. The
biggest events are the Presidential Gala, which is a dressy affair,
Spring Weekend, a messy, crazy party affair, and Campus Dance-- also
dressy. There are also a host of unofficial events, which are more
traditions than anything else. You'll find out about these after you get
into the school.
There are tons of clubs. Brown offers just about every single
extracurricular activity known to man, woman, child, or transsexual.
(Not a joke... You'll see when you're there.)
Greek life is a joke. There are very few frats. They don't even have
their own houses. They are forced onto a Sophomore quad until they move
off-campus into houses they do not own. Don't go to Brown for frat life.
