| Full-time Undergraduate Program |
Brown is known for its high quality of life. Its a very laid back place.
Students are not at all competitive. This intangible factor really adds
to our quality of life in ways that other Universities wouldn't
understand.
Housing is adequate. Its an honest weak point. Some dorms couldn't be
nicer (wood fireplaces, etc.), while others couldn't be worse. The real
threat is that dorm placements are completely random, and done through a
lottery. Many great friendships end in the lottery. Otherwise, housing
is spacious and just good enough that no one really complains. Juniors
and Seniors can move off campus anyway, and then Providence has a lot to
offer. Tons, in fact.
Brown's campus is really nice. Architecturally there are three
categories: Main Campus, Mansions we just bought, and ugly stuff. Main
campus is really beautiful with the historic old buildings we've all
come to expect from the Ivies. Brown grew too quickly, so the University
buys just about all the buildings it can around the University, almost
all of which are exceptionally old Mansions. These also tend to be
historic, and are really nice. Then there's the ugly stuff. Every
University has it. Academic architecture from the 60's and 70's was
disgusting. I'd say that Brown has just enough. You know its there, but
it doesn't detract from what is over all a very pretty campus.
Facilities are fine, not great. Everything a student needs is there.
Sometimes it could be newer; other times a couple more of this
particular item might speed things up, but there's nothing to complain
about.
There is great and diverse food in Providence, but you'll have to pay
for it. The town is expensive! The campus food is better than what I saw
at other schools, but most students leave meal plan ASAP!
Providence ain't New York. Students got to Brown for Brown. Fortunately,
you're not drawn out to do things in Providence much. Students are busy
with their activities, and mostly stay on campus, which is very lively.
Otherwise, everyone goes to New York. I repeat, we go to New York.
Boston is almost universally reviled at Brown. If you don't know why,
first go to New York, then go to Boston.
When I first enrolled Providence had a reputation for being extremely
safe. Since then things have gotten worse, but are not bad. No one
really worries much about safety.
