Bowdoin is a very small school, with a very limited social scene. The
eradication of fraternities in 2000 placed a damper on the party scene
and the venues at which students could count on to go on a Friday or
Saturday night. In response, students moved into fairly large houses
right off campus and turned those into fraternity-like houses, without
the rites and rituals of brotherhood. In recent years, Brunswick
residents who live near these house have been loudly complaining about
the noise, and police often shut down these parties early. The school
has tried (and failed) to replace fraternities' place in the social
scene with Social Houses, which frankly, do not serve the same purpose.
