In the Northeast, employers certainly recognize Bowdoin as one of the preeminent
schools in the nation. Especially in Boston and New York City, a Bowdoin alumnus
can expect to run into many more fellow alumni than they may expect from such a
small school, and networking is therefore a very useful technique in these areas.
Based on personal experience, Bowdoin is not very well known outside of the
Northeast, and can make the entry-level job search a bit tougher than expected.
Many big-name employers will recognize the school for its academic excellence,
but the lack of an alumni base in non-Northeastern areas of the country give
employers little else than name recognition as a basis for their knowledge of the
typical Bowdoin graduate.
The Career Planning Center does a fine job of assisting upperclassmen in their
job search by introducing them to the resources that can be used most effectively
in contacting employers. A number of Portland, ME, Boston and New York employers
recruit on-campus, but not quite as many as one might see at a school closer to
the cities. Nonetheless, because of the number of high-quality employees produced
by Bowdoin, an employer will hold the a degree from the school in high prestige.
