Clearly a compliment to the well-rounded focus of the school, the social
life not only provided a way to let off steam but built collaboration
and many lasting friendships. The absence of a greek system was
actually a blessing in my book. Students had no artificial boundaries
or necessary associations to interact. I felt like I knew (at least on
a first name basis) most of the people in my 2,500 person class. Most
people are friendly with tons of other people but very close with only a
few, which tend to become their roommates after freshman year.
The housing situation is set up such that you are on campus three years
and off campus one year. Freshman year you are housed with other
freshman. Sophomores and seniors are housed near each other and juniors
tend to live off campus (only three years of guaranteed housing). The
pro is that get to experience the city of Boston at the same time as
your classmates and you get to know your class quite well. The downside
is that you get limited interaction, aside from parties and sporting
events, with the years immediately ahead and immediately behind you.
Being on the outskirts of Boston is definitely a plus. The town is home
to numerous colleges and universities. We often joke that the
population of Boston is cut in half during the summer.
