The school isn't located in a very active city so most activities remain
on campus. There is no Greek system (there never was) and I find that
people are generally very open to meeting others. I have never felt out
of place at a party, and because the school is fairly small it is easy
to meet people and then run into them again. The dating scene is okay,
although the down side to the small school is that you can't avoid
anyone. There are two or three bars a few blocks from campus that most
seniors go to Thursday and Friday nights if there isn't a lot going on
for campus events (although it is rare to have a free weekend). There
are a lot of clubs, and I would reccomend any new student to join one or
two. It is a great way to meet people. Every student is automatically a
member of the outing club, which organizes hikes, canoe trips and other
activities for anyone on campus. The sports teams are fun, and I know
that people enjoy going to hockey games and sometimes the football
games. I do a show at the radio station (which I love). The theater
department is a little weak, I've been involved in a few productions
with them, and while they were fun, I have friends whose schools seem a
lot more professional about their theater. It also means that you can be
involved without being a theater major or having any experience in it.
There are a lot of activities every weekend as clubs sponsor dances,
parties, and games. This weekend alone the radio station ran Trivia
Night (an all night trivia game that ends at 8am in the dining hall)
which over 100 students were involved in. On Saturday night the
community service theme house held a party with two campus bands
performing, and Sunday the improv comedy group performed. There was also
an ice fishing trip, a 5 band punk concert, a knitting circle, and more
than a dozen parties. The film board also gets movies each weekend which
students can go to for $1. There are local restaurants, but students
really need a car to go anywhere. Usually you can find a friend with a
car, but most people stick to campus for lack of transportation. A few
times a semester one club pays for two buses to Portland so students can
go to the bars there. There are also a few concerts a year on campus.
