Housing can be good or bad. Some freshman are put into quads which can
be really cramped. I managed to get a huge double. They are usually
really good about finding roommates, I only knew two people on my floor
that didn't get along that well out. Freshman are put into freshman year
centers where they have a junior advisor to help them choose classes,
learn things about the campus, and are basically there to help settle
any domestic issues that arise. After freshman year students can pick
their own roommates and enter a lottery system. Singles are a little
difficult to get until junior year, and no one may live off campus until
they are a senior. Even then, most students live within three blocks of
campus. I really like that it keeps people active and involved at all
hours. There are a few major dorms and then two streets of victorian
houses converted into dorms. There is also the option of a theme house,
of which there are probably 7 a year. All of the members of the house
are involved in a common theme (or are friends of people involved in
that theme). This year there is a performing arts house, a community
service house, an environmental house, and many others. The dining is
amazing. They do it all here at the school and take suggestions from
students seriously. They buy from local farms and give waste to a pig
farm. Our dining was voted most environmentally friendly for the past
few years. Not to mention that it is pretty good. Like anything it can
get old after awhile, but I've experienced some of my friend's schools.
The facilities are okay. We have a few beautiful buildings and a few old
ones that need a little help. There are computer labs but while students
are working on thesis it is difficult to get a computer. Sometimes they
hold classes in the labs, but if you use a mac you will have more
options than you know what to do with. The neighborhood isn't great. The
town has been in a depression and is just now beginning to recover. It
is as safe as any city might be, we have a few security problems each
year, sometimes fairly major, but I think that the school really works
to keep things up. The town itself is a nice place to work with. I am
able to tutor somali children afterschool, and I have friends that work
at the elementary schools.
