Bates is seen as a very selective school, but I found them to be
lenient. They didn't penalize me for the fact that I had received a few
poor grades during high school. My interview was conducted with a
current student and offered a chance for me to ask questions of the
interviewer. It was very relaxed, and helped me to see why Bates was a
good fit for me. Bates doesn't need SAT scores. You can add them to your
application if you like, but I think it shows that the institution
understands that some students don??t do well on standardized tests. Show
that you are a well-rounded student, and tell them what you are really
passionate about. A student in 30 clubs is often less interesting in a
student that dedicated their time and energy to two or three as it shows
a real interest and commitment. I wrote the required two essays and then
added a third one I had written because I felt it said a lot about me. I
don't know if they ever read it, but it didn't hurt. Also, while I would
recommend an overnight stay on any campus, I must admit that it is luck
that decides the student you are placed with. I believe that any student
can find their niche at any school, and you may be placed with the kind
of person you wouldn't otherwise befriend. The Bates campus is beautiful
all year long, although be prepared for cold. Some students come to
visit during the late spring and don't realize that it can be absolutely
freezing in January.
