Socail life is prevalent at Amherst, for those who want it. Whether it's
attending a concert, heading out to a movie at a local theater, heading
to the bars for a few drinks, or playing "beirut" at a keg party in one
of the dorms, you can find your niche. Popular bars include Amherst Brew
Co and Monkey Bar (more sedate), Delanos and McMurphy's (more rowdy) and
the clubby new Atlantis. The off-campus frats are an option and if you
show interest in them, you should have no trouble getting a bid (one is
even coed). If you're on a sports team, expect it to dictate your social
life, if you let it. Whatever you choose, the social scene is very
open. Walk into a dorm where kids are partying, and you'll generally be
welcomed and offered a beer. Other than those in individual dorm rooms,
parties never charge entry fees or restrict attendance.
Dating is the same here as at any school. It's there if you want it, but
so is the anonymous hook-up scene. if you want to impress your
significant other (or a potential) or your parents, dinner at the Lord
Jeff or Pinnochios will do the trick.
The college is small, so you'll likely know most of the people in your
given social scene. For an escape, Boston is 90 minutes by car, and New
York is 2 to 3 hours. Both are accessible by bus and train.
