Nearly 100% of Amherst students live on campus in college housing.
Juniors and seniors generally have little problem getting singles, with
sophomores and freshman usually in doubles or triples. The recent spate
of renovations has led to a bit of a "housing crunch", but the new dorms
(and renovated old ones) will come back online in the next year or two.
The campus/student center, Keefe Campus Center, is about 10 years old and
is excellent, albeit a bit small. It houses the campus post office, a
gameroom, a cafe (Schwemm's), performance spaces, a movie theater, and
several conference rooms.
As far as dining goes, Valentine Dining Hall, located pretty much at the
center of campus, is the only full-service dining hall on campus. The
food isn't terrible, which is about the best I can say of it.
Amherst is located in a semi-rural/suburban town and crime is not an
issue whatsoever, but there are "safe ride" programs (if you're worried
about walking home from a party at night or something) and a student
emergency medical service that supplement the campus police.
