In terms of employer prestige, Amherst is roughly on the same level as any ivy
below HYP. On campus recruiting is excellent- as far as ibanks and consulting
firms go, nearly every top company recruits on campus, including Bain Consulting,
Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, etc. There are very few top firms that do not.
Blackstone Group and McKinsey are two notable exceptions, but they also do not
recruit at many other ivies and top universities. The size of Amherst is a huge
advantage here, as there is less competition, and alums are far more eager to
help students than those at a larger school (probably because there are a lot
fewer people hitting them up for favors).
For professional schools, Amherst is at an excellent level. I have seen the
LSDAS reports of Amherst student success in admissions to Med and Law school, and
the results are fantastic- adjusted for Amherst's size, Amherst is better
represented at the top 6 (HYSCCN) law schools than any other top university
besides HYP. The last calculated average LSAT score for Amherst is a 162, which
is on the same level as the Ivies besides HYP (whose averages are a point or two
higher). Medical school admissions are another strength - see
http://www.amherst.edu/~sageorge/guide1.html for more info on this.
As far as PhD programs, Amherst students also do well- as most grad students can
tell you, professor recommendations are incredibly important, and Amherst's size
and teaching-focused faculty makes it much easier to get to know professors. I
have often found it quite surprising how eager professors here are to meet with
students, and how flexible profs are regarding office hours, etc.
