| Full-time undergraduate program |
In general, Amherst enjoys a great nationwide reputation, and many of the top
consulting and financail firms send representatives to the campus in the fall to
interview juniors and seniors for summer or full-time positions. For those not
seeking a junior professional career, the Career Center is well staffed and you
can schedule appointments to plot a strategy for finding jobs in whatever field
you are interested. Outside of finance and consulting, many students regularly
enter teaching, research, non-profit and government jobs, with 80% of Amherst
grads continuing their study in graduate or professional schools at some point in
their lives.
The Amherst alumni network is strong: with a 65% giving rate, Amherst has the
largest proportion of alumni who donate money of any school in the country. The
Career Center maintains a database of alumni in every career field, and any who
you contact will usually be happy to offer advice, and perhaps even an interview
or internship.
The one caveat is that Amherst has an excellent reputation where it is known,
but smaller firms not in major urban centers (especially outside of the east
coast) may not know it very well. An Amherst degree will never be a detriment,
but the College's small size means that dropping its name will not elicit the
same reaction everywhere as dropping a "Harvard."
