Job Requirements
I was hired as a vb/sql programmer out of college by GE. I had
a degree in political science, but experience in programming due
to CO-OP'ing with the DoD prior to changing majors. Upon
working for a year I realized being a data/programming money was
not for me, especially with the opportunities a performance
driven culture like GE has to offer. I took a developmental job
as a finance analyst in an administrative/leasing group and had
the opportunity for Greenbelt and Lean training. I managed to
utilize my training to save the business over $2M in headcount
and overhead costs and was quickly offered my current role. My
current role utilizes both my former IT skills and the skills
gained while working for finance operations. I am currently
career pathed into a Black belt quality role and must complete
my PMI certification by year end.

Uppers
Visability to senior managment, opportunity to set the stage for a new era of
business process
|
Downers
Dealing with non-exempts, managing without authority

Lifestyle
Hours for the job vary between 45 and 70 hours per week depending on where we
are in the launch/release cycle. Travel is 40-80% split between three cities.
Corporate culture is different between the three cities. Two locations allow
casual attire- what we call the jeans and polo uniform, while the other requires
business dress. Company social events are usually fairly lavish and held close
to the release of the GE Opinion Survey in hopes of raising employee satisfaction
scores. All locations have active affinity groups including: GE Womens Network,
GE Hispanic Form, Asian Pacific Forum, African American Forum, GE GLBT Alliance,
and GE Volunteers. Participating in these groups is a necessity for career
exposure, regardless of if your genetics target you for the group or not. Xerox
Capital Services, being a sub-sub GE business makes it much harder to move upward
into other GE businesses. One has to be very motivated and seek out leaders from
other businesses (hence participation in the affinity groups) in order make make
a true career progression.

Advice to Jobseekers
Be prepared for a high risk/high reward situation. The
compensation isn't in this job, but the exposure is. If you are
looking for a fast track career progression without
participating in IMLP or another similar GE leadership program,
this will lauch your career just as quickly. The instances of
this job throughout GE Capital Solutions businesses will only
increase due to the general shift from mainframe solutions to
Oracle, Seibel, and the likes. To prepare for similar jobs,
learn your business, hone your project managment skills, learn
project lifecycle, DFSS and DMAIC. If you can manage to use all
these skills at once, you will be highly rewarded.
