Job Responsibilities
Well I have had two positions while I worked at wal mart I have been a deli worker and a cashier. I started out in the deli, when I was working in the deli I was one of the night closers so I along with one or two others would have to clean up the deli and get all the food ready for the next day. I would come in at 2pm and do normal deli work I would have to cut meats and cheeses for the customers I would have to fry food to always keep our hot case full for the customers. Plus we would have to keep an eye on the time at all times because evey two hours we would have to put new chickens into our rotisserie to cook we would do our last ones at 6pm everynight. I would also have to keep an eye on our cleaning and cooking logs we had to have everything cleaned atleast every 4 hours, and make sure our food was always fresh we never let any food stay in our hot case for more than 2 hours, if it was in there for two hours we would have to make new and through the old away. After doing all this all day I would still have to clean the whole deli for the night so We closed down the deli at 9pm after that we had untill 11pm to have everything right. In those two hours I would have to wash all the dishes we had for the day, clean inside and out of the rotisserie, I would every night have to fliter out and clean out our fryer I would have to change out the filter that was in what we called the pit. I would also have to turn off the hot case wait for it to cool down and then attempt to get all the burnt on food off of it. I would also wipe down the slicers, scales, wrappers, all doors had to be washed and then dazzled so they would shine for the next day. The front floors had to be swept perfect, the back floor had to be swept and then washed by our pressure washer. All machines in the lobby had to be cleaned, the lobby floors and tables had to washed everynight. After all this cleaning was done (which by now it would be about 10:30pm)The coolers, freezers, and cold case would all have to be filled. So I would have to go to the back of the store to the freezers and find all of our products and bring them back to the deli and stock them in our freezers and coolers. Normally while I am doing all this cleaning I would have someone else making the sandwiches for the next day but at times that didn't happen so after I got done cleaning I would have to rush over to our meat room and make up two boxes of 12 12"subs and 1 box of 12 huge subs, plus we also would have to make lavash there was 4 different kinds to make and I would have to make atleast min. 4 of each. After all the sandwiches were done then they had to be put into the bunker and the old ones would have to come out. I would also have to clean out the bunker so no flys were in it and then fill it back up with all the other products that we kept and sold in the bunker. This was what happend in the deli every night and it HAD to be done! After about five months in the deli it got to hard for me cause of my pregnancy so I was moved over to cashier. Being a cashier is a whole heck of a lot easier than deli. I had fun being a cashier pretty much all you have to do is smile be nice to the customers make sure they got what they came for and send them on they're way with a smile. Of course you do have to do some other things I would have to clean my register and isle all through the day. I would have to put things back if they were not supposed to be in my isle. I would have to wipe down the convier belt all the time from were foods had spilt on in. I had to learn all the codes for how to do wic and food stamps and price comps, shopping cards, none tax cards and a whole lot of other codes that you HAVE to know. At the end of my shift I would have to close my drawer by puttong all my money, coupons and checks into a bag and then print out my read for the day and then take it back to our cash room for them to count out.
Job Requirements
I was hired into the deli with no experience at all. There was none needed for either of the jobs I did because you could be trained on the job. You learned as you went along everyday.
Uppers
The best parts of both of my jobs was the people I worked with. I was always cracking up and making them crack up. It was a very humoris place to work in. Everyone that I worked with was just as crazy as I am so it was great.
Downers
the worst things would have to be when our store manager would be in a bad mood cause if she was then everyone would have to have a bad day that was pretty much made sure of by all the store.
Lifestyle
If you are thinking of working for the wal mart company I say go for it but research the job you are getting before you take it. If you are going to be hired into a part of the store that they just had put in be carefull. Like with me the deli was brand new they just got it finished when I was hired so I was one of the first to work in it. It was not set up in anyway the way it should have been. Everyone was running around with they're heads cut off cause they didn't know what to do when something went wrong. So it was very hecktic at first and it still is and the deli has been open for 6 almost 7 months now. So when you go in for your interview if they tell you we have just opened up this part of the store and we want you to work in it think about it before you take the job Trust me! As far as cashiering it is pretty easier and you will meet a lot of nice people not only the customers but the people you get to work with. Don't get me wrong the deli can be just as if not more fun at times. Really any part of working for wal mart can be fun but you will have down time but that is the way it is no matter where you work. So be carefull with the job you are offered think about all the pros and coms before you take the job and after you think about it if you want to take the job GO FOR IT! You will have fun I promise you that.
Compensation
I started out with $6.30 an hour after 90 days I got a $.40 raise which brought my hourly pay to $6.70 an hour. I was offered the chance to by stock through wal mart for $2.00 however I never did do that. They provided health care benefits to all full time employees after they had be working for atleast 1,000 hours or a 6 month period. I was thrying to get my health care started when I had to quit. So I have never had health care through the wal mart company. The plan however that I was going to get had health care dental and short term disability and would cost me about $23.00 every pay check so about $46.00 a month.
