Independence. As long as I makde due dates, no one bothers me. Finished
produce is a nice feeling - concrete accomplishment. Deal with people from all
walks of life. Pay is generally good - I got $25 per hour on full-time permanent
job.

Downers
Getting information from system engineers. To them, it's so
simple, they don't understand the need to get it all in a
document. Real downer is getting laid off after major documents
are completed. I've had a number of full-time permanant jobs end
prematurely. My last two jobs ended after 8 months. In good
times, experienced writer is in demand.

Lifestyle
Hours are generally 40 hours per week. Little overtime or "bulges" in work
load. Casual dress code generally. Management cooperates in document
production; leads to trust and mutual admiration.

Compensation
Compensation varies from good to excellent.

Read about usability standards, technical documents. Ask users
what they like/don't like about your documents. Feedback is
essential.
