Job Responsibilities
In general the major job responsibilities are around process improvement. Specifically, these entail project management, problem solving, innovation, and lean.
Job Requirements
Understand, this line of work cannot be taught effectively in the classroom. One needs real work experience to be able to complete projects and gain tangible results. However, a solid education including a masters is expected, if not required, as one climbs the ladder. Remember time in a career is measured in years, not months.
Uppers
Constantly changing environment . . . new problems, new challenges, new people, new places. Very exciting and rewarding work when it comes together.
Downers
The downside is, one is always under the gun to produce results. One is only as good as his or her last project. One has to keep pace with a changing world so your education, experience, and knowledge must be constantly renewed.
Lifestyle
To gain internal consulting positions like the ones I've had recently, one must first establish one's pedigree with a top consulting firm. To do this, one starts at the bottom, sucks it up and edits power-point presentations, makes copies, and generally sits against the wall in the meetings. This period also requires a ton of travel. After that, one can generally move internal to a good company and the travel ebbs considerably.
Compensation
Base is well over $100K annually with a possible 35% bonus.
Advice to Jobseekers
Learn to write; I know you think you can write now, but you cannot. Suck it up, keep quiet and learn. Take a risk. Don't be timid with recommendations. The three most important words: integrity, integrity, integrity. Never lie, cheat or steal.
