Job Responsibilities
Current serve as second tiered technical support for video and multimedia applications. Working as Product Developer for new audio and web conferencing platform.
Job Requirements
Decided that Grad School was a must. Did not have a telecom or business or computer degree, so went back nights for my Masters. Undergrad degrees in Psychology and Biology, as I thought I was going in a different direction. Need business background, finance and/or accounting (economics does count as high) with some minor is a liberal arts study (communications, english, creative writing) and you should have a second language proficiency. Must be able to check the ego at the door.
Uppers
I have created a role with my company where basically I have become the first call, but that does not mean that I could not be replaced. I like working with people within the company outside of my organization. I currently am not a fan of my management, as they are not as creative in solution finding (former GTE people more concerned with process rather then revenue).
Downers
Working for former GTE people. Very different mind set.
Lifestyle
With the exception of answering surveys like this one, I give VERIZON 100% sustained between the lines. I am here at 7:45 AM just about everymorning and stay until 5:15 PM. I do not socialize with any of the people within my organization, but have a number of friends from other departments that I will meet with. I dress up for work (parochial upbringing) and that is my choice. I do not go to company social events any more, as my commitments to both my family and a couple of volunteer groups takes up that time. If you are a diversity candidate, VERIZON has done a lot of work to advance the role of those that are defined within specific government catagories.
Compensation
We are paid fairly well related to industry standards. The Corporation is looking to define some of the incentive package and it is not as attractive in some areas as when I first came here. Overall, it is better then average related to the rest of the market. This is a Fortune 8 corporation that is continually looking to extend their global reach.
Advice to Jobseekers
Find a mentor within the Corporation once you get in. If you want in, be persistent at finding someone within VERIZON that can help you. A friend of your parents or aunt/uncle/grandparents, a neighbor, a vendor who might have interaction with this company. Know the annual report and what is going on both within VERIZON and withing the telecommunications field. Build a network of people that you can turn to for assistance. Your friends who go out with you on Friday and/or Saturday night is probably not the answer. Seek out conferences, seminars, shows locally and get yourself invited so that you can begin to network (and the coffee usually is not that bad either). Join a users group that might assist. Network, network, network yourself.
