Job Requirements
Nuclear Engineering provides a path to a Masters or PhD in
Nuclear Engineering with 5 different majors to choose from.
Classes are on the small side, with excellent quality and
guidance from faculty. Cannot comment on workload related to
classes or grading, since my position is Administrator of
Business operations, that does not include academic operations.
The staff provide support to faculty and students.
|
Uppers
The best parts of my job are the autonomy, the salary, the privacy of having
your own office, the ability to shape a department and make changes as you see
fit.
|
Downers
The worst part of being a manager is the stress of becoming
involved in staff problems, resolving conflict and having to
sometimes make decisions that are hard, but necessary.
|
Lifestyle
This position does not involve travel. The hours are 8 to 5. There are various
social events that I need to attend, since Administrators represent their
departments. The dress code is somewhat casual, but not dress down. Diversity
in this position is tremendous, since we have students and faculty from all over
the world, with the majority of students from China. It is a wonderful
opportunity to meet people from other countries and learn about the rest of the
world.
|
Compensation
The base salary is greater than $50k. There are no bonuses or
stock options, however the benefits are excellent, with a 10% of
gross pay contribution from the employer towards a 403b.
Medical benefits are 95% paid, which include HMO,dental and
vision.

Advice to Jobseekers
I would advise job seekers considering a management position to
fully prepare themselves and take some management classes, to
learn how to keep staff in a "team mode". The hardest thing is
trying to get staff to all want to work together towards a
common goal, versus just concentrating on their own job and
upward mobility.
