Job Responsibilities
I case or prep mail each day for delivery to my patrons who I respect for if it wasn't for them I would have no job. But after 27 years I'm about to retire after my next back surgery. I deliver mail 6 days a week almost every week and I work 8-10 hours a day service to the patrons is my goal but overall the Postal Service has gotten away from service and is working towards numbers for Jacksonville and Washington but as long as I carrier mail I will give service to the customer.
Job Requirements
To be hired for a job with the U.S.Postal Service having been a military Vet would help but nowadays it's not needed, you have to have a HS diploma and 21 years of age. To advance in the postal service you just have to pass a test and the postal service will put you in a intern training program.
Uppers
After you finish in the office you leave to go out on your route to start delivery of mail and you don't see your supv. out on the street.
Downers
Working with people who really don't care about their job, they are just there for a pay check. And supv. who doesn't back the good carriers and lets the sorry carriers get away with the way they work and care about their patrons.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle of this is that they (the postal service)don't care about you, just want you to meet the numbers and you will work from 6am-1630pm or 7.45am-17.45 or they can work you 2 more hours for a total of 12 hours a day. you also must have a uniform you wear and the postal service pay you a clothing allowance that won't buy everything but it does help.
Compensation
The Postal Dervice is a great place to work if you live in a area that has a cheap cost of living but remember it pay the same all over the United States. max pay is $48893 plus overtime and 4 hrs of sick leave every 2 weeks and 8 hr of Annual leave every 2 weeks. Plus they match dollar for dollar for the first 3% and .50 for dollar on the next 2% as long as you invest 10% of your pay into the TSP tax deferred.
Advice to Jobseekers
I would tell everyone who is looking for a job with the Postal Service to go back to College and find a better place to work because the Postal Service is going out of Business if the way they are going doesn't change they treat new people like dirt and like this is the only life you have you aren't supposed to have a life outside the Postal Service.
