Job Responsibilities
Environmental, Health and Safety Manager for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Provide comprehensive envionmental, health and safety management and services to a diverse population of engineers, scientists, biologist, and skilled laborers. These services involve program development and implementation(15%), health and safety surveys/assessments (20%), Training development and instruction (20%), safety meetings development, coordination, and dissemintaion (5%),ergonomic assessments (15%), complaint investigation (5%), accident investigation and worker compensation management (5%), hazardousd materials and waste management (15%).
Job Requirements
Master of Public Health (MPH)with an emphasis in industrial hygiene and enviornmental health. Courses were high quality and provide a solid foundation for me in my career advancement and preparartion in attaining my Certified Industrial Hyiene (CIH) credential. Grading was fair and based on individual performance (no curve). Professors were knowledgeable, interactive, engaging, and available for consultation. Class selection varied and there were no problem in getting into any class.
Uppers
Flexibility, freedom to perform my job without interference, and the satisfaction in developing and conducting training. The satisfaction of getting positive and constructive criticism in the quality of instruction and improvements to make thge training experience more productive.
Downers
Lack of managerial support and conmittment to the health and safety program. Support is generally symbolic rather than substantiative.
Lifestyle
Business hiurs are normally 40 hours a week, with occasional overtime to accomplish project tasks. Business dress is causal, because of the work involved. No formal social events. Office gatherings are common and welcomed. Business travel is once a quarter. The workforece is diverse in gender, race, and ethnicity.
Compensation
Base salary is based on the level of education, work experience, and appropriate professional credentials. My compensation is $88,000 and based on 20 years of work experience, continuing education, and professional certification (CIH, CHMM, REHS, CEHT, AST, & RHSP). Cas awards based on performance. These are not predictable and can be scant. No stock options. Typical benefits package: health and dental insurance, optional life insurance, optional long-term care insurance, 401K, Health Savings Accounts (limited right now), Flexible Spending Account, generous leave after 15 years of service (2 days a month)
Advice to Jobseekers
Masters degree or PhD necessary for advancement. Professional recognition as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified hazardous Material Manager (CHMM)or Registered Enviornmental Manager (REM), and a Registered Enviornmental Health Specialist are necessary and helpful in professional advancement. The CIH, CSP, and CHMM may be required for promtion and upper mobility. Job prospects are fair to good depending on the region of the country you are willing to locate too. Opportunities in the Federal government are good, but you have to be willing to wait and put in your time to access upper mobility. Plus you will need to be willing to relocate for upper mobility.
