Job Responsibilities
As a professional cook, my responsabilities are: composing appealing appetizers, salads, entrees, cold soups, deserts, baking bread, inventory, counting stock, ordering stock, preparing all main essential things needed in a kitchen ( tomato sauce, veal stock, fish broth, chicken broth, veg broth ). As well as maintenance of equipment etc.
Job Requirements
In order to become a professional chef, the pre- requisits are -high school diploma; -Math 436/514. My school tuition was 460$ + 100$ for uniforms + 100$-2000$+ in equipment, knives etc. The program was a 10-11month intensive basic culinary course. It was handson and lots of fun. The first month is always boredom-filled theory and lectures all day. However those times are essential or else you wont understand or start to grap the culinary terminology. The teachers are understandable and respectably leniant to meet everyones' individual needs. They have exams wich aren't hard as long as u hadn't missed the demonstration previously. Towards the end, you have to get hired at a restaurant to work 3 weeks for free as an intern. They evaluate you and graduate if passed. I have to say the only time i fell behind was when i had a couple projects due and i waited till the last minute.
Uppers
The most enjoyable thing about my job is that i'm doing some hands on & it could become a little bi trepetitve in also could teaches me so many new thigs. Independant, I dont have an employer watching me i have the freedom to do as i please. I like the people and the environement that i work in.
Downers
I work at night and am always working on bithdays, celebrations, holidays, most special events. Could be working in a small area where its really hot and uncomfortable. Cutting or burning yourself. The dead season (late september till early march) most cooks being payed hourly, dont make enough money due to lack of work and hours. This is why being on salary is sometimes a good thing.
Lifestyle
This field is for people who love to work. People who have a basic knowledge of food and are willing to learn a great amount recipesand tips on cooking. You need to be high spirited and filled with energy. You need to be able to continue working enethough myour gas is on empty. Read lots of books especially recipes concerning food.
Compensation
Upon hiring I was being payed 8$. After 2and a half years of working there i am being payed 10$ an hour. However if i would work for a restaurant downtown, i could make up to 12$/hr with my experience.
