Job Responsibilities
Your responsibilities for running a TSC store will be all inclusive from sales to profit control through various means. They are driving sales with appropriate merchandising, ordering, meetings with associates to attain these goals. This is a daily occurence and will be only one of many different tasks. Another responsibility is reviewing your P. & L. statements to see which areas are in need of improvement. There are many documents at your disposal to analyse these seperate areas and attain a game plan to increase sales in different departments. You will be responsible for implementing new sales iniatives commonly referred to as resets. There is a detailed overview to achieve this that is for your size store. You will be also responsible for achieving profit plans by controlling profit margins, payroll, expenses, and shrinkage. You are also responsible for the scheduling of associates as well. As you can see this all means that the store manager is held accountable for everything involved with the store.
Job Requirements
The hiring process is interviews with store managers and district managers then once hired will be put into the training program which can be from 3 months to 18 months depending on the qualifications of the person. Education requirements are common with other retailers being college is recommended but not required if you have a good amount of experience. The training is fairly strait forward with a training manager you will be under then after completion of the program will be put in charge of the store you trained in. To receive your own store will go through numerous interviews with district managers and regional managers. Once passed you will be available for a store once one opens up.
Uppers
The positives of the jobs are the complete freedom you have in attaining these goals as long as you follow through with company policies. Locations of stores are located usually in smaller communities that are close to large metropolitan areas so the cost of living is a little more affordable.
Downers
The negatives of TSC are like many retailers long hours such as 60 hour work weeks, although I have known some managers to run there store with only working 48 hours but this is not the norm. Working evenings and weekends is the norm and one day off a week is usually what is taken. You will be doing plenty of hourly tasks as well such as freight moving, and stocking as well.
Lifestyle
This is a company where you will need to work probably 50 - 60 hours a week and 6 days a week. Business dress is jeans and the company smock which can be ok. Social events are rare and usually only for managers twice a year in managers meetings. Overall remember this is retail and alot of time will be spent at your location and even some traveling to other stores to help out.
Compensation
Compensation for store managers is depending on the volume of dales for your store. Base will range from $35,000 - $50,000 with the majority of managers in the $40,000 - $47,000 range. Bonuses are paid on monthly goals achieved through attaining sales goals and are a percentage of sales, Uually around $350.00 a month and year end bonuses figuring around $7500 - $12,000 for the year but can reach as high as the $25,000 range but very uncommon.
Advice to Jobseekers
My advise for newcomers is to be prepared to work hard and actually do a great deal of physical work. If you are wanting to be a clip board manager this is not the career for you. This can be a very satisfying company to work for being that it is very financially sound and does not have inventory replinishment problems at all. Good luck with your dcecisions.
