Job Responsibilities
Well let me start by saying this. The hours that I currently work are 6am-3pm five days a week, usually including one weekend day(Sat or Sun.)Some days I stay later than three, and on rare occasion I must be present at work at 5:30 am. My job duties as the stores only manager include many different things. My main and probably most important duty would be to run the floor during most of my shift. I do not manage my store by sitting in the office. I take care of customers and tend to my staff's needs helping them and encouraging them to do well for about the first six to seven hours of my shift. This includes making coffee, preparing food, assisting to the stores baker, not to mention my other staff on shift. It's my duty to also keep everyone in line. I must see to it that things are getting done and customers are getting taken care of as quickly as possible. I must see to it that we do not run out of any products, and that the shift runs smoothly with no major issues. It is my job to make sure all the staff recieve breaks when they get one, and that their station while on break is covered. I must keep my store up to always fresh standards at all times. At one pm. I pull my stores day end and for the next hour count tills and cash from the past 24 hrs. It is my responsibilty to make sure sales and cash counts are recorded and that the money is banked properly. Aside from the daily activity of running the shift, it is my duty to hire new staff and fire non-performers. I am in charge of yearly reviews and raises, payroll, weekly schedules, files for all staff members, inncentive programs, and basic upkeep on my store. I am in charge of planning holliday parties, and am on call 24/7. I must check in with my evening supervisors and make sure that their shifts are also running smoothly. Basically to put things in a nut-shell my store is my baby, and I must treat it like one.
Job Requirements
I am not sure that this question pertains to what I do. I'll do my best though. I did have to go to training classes about a year into my position. These classes can be taken at any time, and can even be mandatory depending on the store owner before you are given the title as manager. These classes are set up and truely run for new store owners. This is where you learn all of the ins and outs of the company. if taken all at once the classes run for about 8 weeks six to seven days a week. They are normally the length of one regular shift about eight hrs, and are split up between classroom and hands on classes. There are also a few field trips. IE: The roasting plant where Tims coffee beans are roasted. The classes are great. The corporate trainers are so helpfull and friendly, and although at times the classes can be very long and repetative you come out of training fully prepared to own your own and run a store.
Uppers
The best part of my job would have to be the satisfaction I get from dealing with customers. I love keeping my staff motivated to be fast and friendly and the outcome is great. Sure, every so often a certain customer may be miserable and ofcourse that is no fun, but when you do make somebody's day with the coffee that you prepared and your smile and you can see by the expression on their face that they are impressed with your skills and your staffs skills, that's what keeps me waking before sunrise every morning motivated and ready to go! Did I mention the free coffee?
Downers
The worst part about my job is the long term effects it will probably eventually take on my body. I would love to continue to do what I am doing, and I really do not think that I am suited for any sort of slow paced desk job, but 8 plus, hrs. on my feet every day, running around like a crazy woman will someday show, whether it be back or leg problems or something along those lines. As of right now I honostly can not think of any other downers for the job. I suppose that being on call 24/7 sort of stinks, but rarely does it actualy interfear with my home or social life, and if it does, it's usually a quick phone call or short visit to my store off shift.
Lifestyle
The want to work with people is crucial. I see half the town of Hamburg every morning at work, and I at least say hello to almost all of them. Another thing that I must stress to anybody looking to work at any Tim Hortons is that it is very fast paced. I would not recomend a job to anybody who is not willing to multi-task or move at speed-walk pace a lot of the time. At my store we serve about 150 cars through our drive thru per hour from about 6 am till around 9 am. After this we average about 80-100 cars per hour until around noon, when we average around 50. You must be a team player. We all help one another out to get the job done right. I must also mention that Tim Hortons has very high clenliness standards, and unless you are willing to chip in to keep a clean environment for the customers I would not recomend a job with the company. Tim Hortons has a strict uniform pollicy, however the company should and will supply your uniform. Although Tims uniforms may not be the most fashionable outfits out there, they are easy to care for, comfortable, easy on the eye, long lasting, and always look professional. They are also consistant throughout the chain like all of Tim Hortons products.
Compensation
Base salary for the store managers position varries throughout the company. Since all stores are franchise owned it is up to the store owners what they want to start ones salary at. This number would probably be based on ones past work history, if they have been with the company for awhile or not, job duties, etc. Bonuses stock options and benefits will also vary from store to store based on the owners. At my current location health innsurance, sick time, vacation time, and 401K are offered to some employees. These benefits are based on full or part time status, length of time being with the company, and position in which the staff member holds.
Advice to Jobseekers
To those considering this field, I will tell you this. If you work for good store owners that are truely good people, like I do, your chances with the company are huge. There is so much room to grow, even to the point of working for corporate, or becoming a store owner. The Tim Hortons chain is rapidly growing in the states and has proven to be succesfull. Make sure that when you apply you list good refrences on your application because Tim Hortons does do refrence checks. It is also important that during your interview you are friendly and outgoing. Just be yourself, make sure you are clear in the questions you are asked and smile. The person interviewing you will want to be sure you are approachable. Good Luck!
