Job Responsibilities
Work full-time providing legal advice and representation on a wide variety of OSHA topics. Worksite and plant audits performed. Technical questions answered on safety and health topics. We represent clients at all stages that have had OSHA investigations and enforcement inspections resulting in citations and penalties issued against them.
Job Requirements
The core curriculum was well planned to give students a solid grounding in issues and topics covered by the bar exam. Beyond core classes covered on the bar, there were numerous opportunities to pick up classes that were of interest. Among others, elective classes were taken in health law, environmental law, administrative law, insurance law, and labor law. I have drawn upon what I have learned in these classes working at the firm. I do not recall being closed out of popular classes. The evening program had opportunities to take most elective classes. There were always a number of excellent classes with top-rated professors available. The workload was relatively heavy if one wanted to compete with the top students. I would not have felt comfortable walking into any class unprepared.
Uppers
Being able to share my work experience and legal training and experience with clients who want to be the best at what they do. Clients that want to excel at everything they do will take the opportunity to enlist help in the very specific area that I provide my services - OSHA law.
Downers
Difficulty with clients that do not want to expend the resources on safety and health that they should.
Lifestyle
If you love what you are doing the hours are not an issue. There will be some long hours and travel with most large firms. These are really the opportunities to achieve great things. The firm is really a diverse group that enjoys getting together for seasonal festivities. There are opportunities to relax the dress code, one needs to be cognizant of putting the best foot forward for clients. The practice groups and staff in one's area really work to promote a team spirit. There is a strong corporate culture of giving back to the community and helping with charity as well.
Compensation
At $115,000 for a junior associate, one can recognize a commitment to draw and retain the best talent in the community. There are bonuses available and meals when working late. Rides home are available when needed. A strong training program exists to enhance the skills of associates.
