Job Responsibilities
1. Marketing: without it you have no business. 2. Determing Content for Web Site: without a website, you have no credibility in today's market. 3. Doing the contracted work until the cash flow allows contracting some, or all, of the work to other editors. 4. Keeping the books, until the cash flow allows a CPA to do the accounting.
Job Requirements
This entrepreneurial endeavor requires experience in writing, editing, marketing, public relations, bookkeeping, and getting the client to sign the letter of agreement. My four years in college (Communication Arts), was just the beginning of my true education.
Uppers
1. When the client signs on the dotted line. (*smile*) 2. When the client pays. 3. Determining my own salary and my own schedule. When I need to stay up all night meeting a deadline, I do it. When I want to take off to see my stepson's play during school hours, I do it. I love it! 4. The possibilities are vast!
Downers
Starting out doing almost everything yourself requires a great deal of organization skills . . . . A small business needs to ensure appropriate capital up front, as well as keeping the business coming in. Not enough capital can be a great distraction.
Lifestyle
1. Dress Code: business casual, suits, evening wear. 2. Work hours: varies from all nighters to being able to take off for my stepson's school projects/plays. 3. Business travel: not yet, but soon will require both national and international trips, especially to South America. 4. Diversity: my business requires contracting with those whose first language is something other than English.
Compensation
Base Salary: Approximately $1200 a month, after expenses. I know, it sounds awful, but it's growing monthly. And the market is huge!
Advice to Jobseekers
Advice: know at least a little about everything for making a small business successful. You can always find someone else to ask questions for more in-depth knowlege. The outlook? Fantastic! Having the knowlege, the willingness to work hard and smart, being in the right place at the right time, and always being prepared enough to take action whenever that right time happens.
