Job Responsibilities
As an independent consultant, I'm responsible for everything:
Marketing/sales: writing articles, contacting people in my
network, giving presentations.
Actual project work: project management/planning,
interviewing/training clients, putting together project results.
These two tasks fluctuate depending on how much project work is
due at the time (i.e. project work can take up to 100%, inbetween
projects is 100% marketing/sales efforts).

Job Requirements
The Drucker School is a small program, so quality, particularly
individual attention, is high. Getting into classes is usually
not a problem, and can be solved with a discussion with the
professor. Grading is fair. Workload varies from class to
class, but is not overwhelming; classes dominated by the parttime
students tend to have lighter workloads.

Uppers
Experience in all aspects of running a business.
|
Downers
Lack of team interaction/support. Being responsible for
everything, from the minute details to long term planning.
|
Lifestyle
Work hours tend to be long, travel depends on where your clients are. Social
events are usually networkings type activities- giving presentations and the
following chats, joining a board, joining various associations related to
consulting or my client's industries. Dress code depends on the client.

Compensation
Compensation depends on what you sell- I guess as a independent
consultant, you could call it 100% comission, as there is no base
salary.

Advice to Jobseekers
Build strong experience with a name brand consulting company, and
continually develop your network of clients, prior clients,
potential clients- hone the quality of your communication skills
and channels, and continually follow up, follow up, follow up.
This is a business that relies on relationships, and that takes
time to build.
