Job Responsibilities
Was in charge of the over all management operations of the grocery (food) department, plus acting as over all manager of the store in the absence of store manager. assisted in the operation of additonal departments, ie: deli, bakery, meat, seafood, floral, produce, bakery. assisted in the checking in of vendors, the recieving of trucks, and directing the instore safety team. over all responsibilites for profit and lose of the store, budgeting of employee resources including time and hours. worked to ensure complete customer satisfaction to retain current customers, and encourage new customers. maintian, quality and feshness of products, as well as cleanliness of the interior and exterior of store
Job Requirements
A 22-week training program, that incuded 1-4 weeks in each department of the store with written, and oral tests at the end of each section, plus the occasional special project, depending on the departmet. with a final written and oral test- presentation at the end
Uppers
good benefits, good pay, good employees, good working conditions, for the most part, good managers
Downers
Bad, irregular hours. no over time, nights and weekends, holidays, unruly customers, shoplifters.
Lifestyle
Business casual, 50-plus hours a week, no ot, very occasional travel to the office for a meeting, or another store. 3-4 social gathers a year, some with spuse, some not. a great job if you are single, bad if you have a family and kids, you wont see them, you will work weekends, dont kid your self, they will tell you that you will get 1-2 weekends of a month, MAYBE! i worked on average 3 weekend a month, with another co-manager, so should have had eveyother weekend off. some store have 1 co-manager, so you could work more. not many females in management, but growing, the same for minorities
Compensation
Starting base varies, but general around $30,000 with bonus potential max $6500 starting, dont expect more then about $6000 before tax. decent benefits. a family of 4 (you, wife, 2 kids) HMO medical only cost me $130/13 times a year (you get paid once a period, there are 13 periods in a year)dental and eye and long term and life all extra
Advice to Jobseekers
Do it 3-4 years for the experience, then move on (if no family) if single, stick with it, but look for the and recognize the moment that your movement has stopped and you will be stuck in the same position at the same store forever, and leave. there are people there who have been a co-manager (assisted manager) for 10 years plus AND WILL NEVER BE PROMOTED.
