Uppers
Being an adviser (sometimes even an expert) in continuously evolving and progressive and now days almost inseparable part of everyone??s daily lives in the field of Information Technology, is most rewarding and highly satisfying feeling !
Downers
1-st of all: - you are usually called upon when there is a problem - so almost every call to you is potentially some sort of a problem or a request. Few users and very seldom call to tell you how great everything is working or how good of a job "you" did to fix it ! I guess when things are function and sometimes even well - that's is considered the normal state of operations. You're only there to return and insure that everything is "normal" and nothing more, nothing less !? :))
Lifestyle
Well, to each their own, but generally speaking us Techies like hobbies, usually involving Technology/Electronics, my personal favorites are none characteristic - Nature, Animals. Usually us "computer geeks" are commonly pictured with "Coke bottle" glasses and frustrating personal lives, again I feel I'm fortunate enough to not have either problems (thanks Mom and Dad ;)). Now work hours are dependent on the work load - so they vary a great deal ! There are days where "no one's crying" and days when everyone??s having problems and there isn't enough hours in the day. If you want to be in this line of work get used to dealing with frustrated, sometimes even angry users ! Remember : if you fix/help their problems too quickly - they'll think of you as a "smart ass". On the other hand if you take too long then - "you know less then they do and you should learn from them" !
Compensation
I'm on the very low end of my Salary Requirements for 2 reasons : 1) I've been with this company "too long" 14 years, 2) I work in a very mixed environment (Hardware, Operating Systems, Platforms, Applications) and sacrificed the multi - exposure for the financial benefits.
Advice to Jobseekers
If you want to be on the progressive ("bleeding edge") end of this field, then definitely try for the true Technology giants : Microsoft, IBM, Intel etc... Otherwise you'll develop good skills in a lot of areas, but be an expert in none !
