Job Responsibilities
I teach elementary ed. Certified for k-6, presently teach 2nd.

The kids.
Downers
Self-important, pseudo-professionals who have never actually spent an hour in a classroom but who feel the need to tell everyone (in the classroom) how to do their jobs. Clueless politicians (like G. W. Bush, as an example) who don't have the foggiest idea what education is about (especially in Bush's case), but who, nevertheless, want to impose their uninformed opinions on the real education professionals.
Lifestyle
As much as teachers kvetch about the hours, they're not really all that bad. My husband is in the investment business. His hours and job stress are SIGNIFICANTLY greater than mine. I may be tired at the end of a day. He is destroyed.
Compensation
$53,000, after 36 years. No bonuses. No stock options. Only partial health insurance, state retirement system (pension).
Advice to Jobseekers
Love it or leave it. You'll never get [monetarily] rich, but watching children learn and grow and knowing you are a causal factor is compensation far beyond anything money can buy.
