Job Responsibilities
I am a Head of an Art department in a Secondary school teaching
students from the ages of 11-16 years of age.

Job Requirements
All staff must have a degree and an education certificate.
Classes are, on average 28 students.The workload is high but you
have school vacations(holidays).

Education is about helping others succeed and is never boring.
You have alot of independent control and can use your imagination and creativity
in many ways.

Downers
Students can present challenging behaviour. You do not have many
spare moments and attend meetings and In-service training
session after the day's work.

Lifestyle
Hours are fluid to some extent. Extra time is taken out if required. The dress
code is formal. Job seekers need to have flexibility, a full knowledge of their
subject, good social skills and a sense of humour.

Compensation
I am paid well to run a small department in a challenging
environment. I make around ??30,000 per annum. There are no
bonuses but I have Management points for responsibility.

Advice to Jobseekers
This is a profession and demands self-discipline and creativity.
The responsibility is big but the rewards are big too (but not
in monetary terms). Teachers are always needed, good teachers
are like gold-dust.The job outlook is good if there is a shortage
of teachers. If there is not, train in a shortage subject.
