Job Responsibilities
Overall maintaince and support for the network and phone system. This involves installation, configuration, and support of all computers, printers, phones (VoIP), network equipment.
Job Requirements
Something that I did not consider before was that a lot more people and people control skills would be needed. I have taken several techinical classes, but asided from that, you need to know how to speak in non-technical terms to people and calm them when they are angry.
Uppers
Being in change and responsible for the overall operation and function of the building. We have close to 500 computers, if they were to go down or the network fails, the productivity level will be next to nothing. With out the computers and network, no work can get done. So it is a great responsibility and challange to keep it up constantly.
Downers
Typically you are not one of the favorite people in the building. In general when something does not work, you are the one blamed, even it it is not your fault. If documents are lost, for whatever reason, wheater you did it or not, it is you fault and they are mad at you.
Lifestyle
The future looks great for this field, it is fast growing and will continue to be so. This is a field that will always be around regardless of the economy. Just make sure it is really what you want before you get into it.
Compensation
Full benefits are give that are comparable to most companies. Salary is good, base starting pay is around $35 to $40k a year. It goes up with more experience and education as well as any certifications you have. Basically the more you know, the more you get.
