Job Responsibilities
Pursuing responsible parties for damages paid out on Homeowner's insurance claims.
Uppers
Since we deal with insurance claims, every simgle case is different. There is a lot of variation in the details of each claim. Although the avenues through which we decide to pursue the responsible parties may be fairly set by laws and available evidence, each claim presents new challenges. There is a lot of research and investigation involved, especially in product liability claims. There is always something new to learn.
Downers
Claims never end. There is rarely a sense of "closure" since every settled claim has five more right behind it. The lack of information available on an individual claim can sometimes be frustrating.
Lifestyle
Work hours are flexible with optional shorter weeks / longer days, flexible time off, and no weekend hours. The office environment is mostly female, although there are several men and the ethnic mix is extremely diverse. The office dress code is business casual.
Compensation
Salary base is competitive, in the 20-30K range to start. There are performance bonuses, company matching funds for 401K plans, individual savings plans, and very good health coverage.
Advice to Jobseekers
This job will almost certainly never go out of favor. The recovery on paid claims is a very important part of the insurance company's income. For anyone considering a career in Insurance Subrogation, I would suggest learning as much about Tort law, engineering, and construction as possible. The more information you have, the better your chances of recovery. The job itself is relatively easy to learn. The negotiation skills, understanding the insurance policies, and interpreting the evidence is what gets tricky. If you like to think on your feet, solve problems, have a head for numbers, and like to argue, this may be the job for you.
