Job Responsibilities
Hiring and training student staff members in the residence halls. Evaluating student staff members. Running a summer program for high school students at the university.
Job Requirements
Most people in the field have a master's degree, although a PhD or EDD may be required for the highest levels. The classes involved are usually some kinds of student development theory, environmental theory, diversity, psychology/cousneling and specialized courses (like leadership development).
Uppers
Working with the students can be a lot of fun. They are usually invested in the work and energetic.
Downers
The work becomes very routine, doing the same things every year. The hours are very demanding.
Lifestyle
The hours can be demanding with a lot of weekend and evening hours - this depends on the position and the university. There is usually little travel, except yearly professional conferences. Most offices are pretty casual and collegial.
Compensation
The salary is generally very low. Most starting salaries with the masters degree is in the low $20,000s. The benefits are very good - most universities offer full medical, life, retirement, and good vacation benefits.
