Job Responsibilities
The most important job was helping customers as they came in the door whether it was to pay a bill, answer a questions or give them a quote. Another responsibility was answering the phone. This may seem like a very mundane responsibility BUT the way you answer the phone can help change a person's mood either good or bad. When you answer the phone in a good mood and ready to help chances are that even if the person is calling upset, they are not going to take your head off when they hear your voice. This is a place to resolve alot of tension with someone. People can almost tell if you are smiling on the other end of the line even without seeing your face. These are the main responsibilites as the office manager. Other tasks are filing, order supplies, writing up policies for customers coming in, preparing quotes, basic organization of the office and banking.
Job Requirements
People that are looking for a very people driven field would do well in insurance. Your one and only focus are your customers and if you don't have a true desire to help your customers they will go somewhere else where they actually feel like someone cares. In the insurance business you are dealing with people's very private and personal information and there must be a degree of trust between you and your customers. As an office manager you are also licensed in the type of insurance the agent would like your help in. That may mean Life/Health or Property/Casualty etc. Each office may vary based on the office needs. The classes to obtain your license are only a few days to a week long and are packed with information. There is alot of studying to be done to prepare yourself to take the licensing test.
Uppers
Working with the customers. Some of them understand how much you care and are very respectful to you.
Downers
Working with the customers. Some of them don't care who you are, they don't like insurance people no matter who they are. They don't understand why their prices are so high and they are going to chew on anyone in their way.
Lifestyle
Work hours are basic 8am-5pm (normally). There is some travel involved when it comes to classes or meetings but not alot of travel. The dress code is professional slacksskirts and a shirt/sweater. Each office may vary in their hours and dress code.
Compensation
Compensation is also something that varies by office and duties. I started at $10.00/hr base and went up from there based on the insurance licenses that I acquired over time. The more licenses that you acquire the more responsibilities. I had health insurance which was very basic but it was coverage.
Advice to Jobseekers
This is a job for someone who is very driven and determined to help others. This is also a job for a person who loves learning as you go and is looking for a challenge every day. There are always things to learn and it is normally never the same two days in a row.
