Job Responsibilities
I am a technical recruiter and I recruit for civil engineering, environmental, GIS and administrative positions from an entry level to Vice Presidential level. I also provide training relative to behavioral interviewing; provide advice relative to salary administration, policies, employee relations, immigration visas and recruiting strategies.
Uppers
Working with the candidates; most of my managers are very responsive and value the service I provide. No day is ever the same as the day before - it is very challenging, but rewarding.
Downers
We respond one way or another to most if not all candidates and sometimes candidates get upset when we let them know they are not being offered the position - but then there are those times when the candidates profusely thank you for giving them a response. Some managers can drag their feet and the candidates are calling me, but I'm unable to respond. Some of my searches are very tough and it's frustrating not to find candidates as quickly as we'd like to.
Lifestyle
First off, our company has a business casual dress code. For some searches, I'll make calls to candidates at home, which of course carries over into the evening - but then it is very rewarding when you find the right candidate. My position involves periodic travel to either our outer offices or to college recruitment fairs. There are social events associated with both types of travel. There are also networking events relative to the industry and our role. This is an ever changing field and it's very interesting to learn about what other companies are doing.
Advice to Jobseekers
To succeed as a recruiter, you have to be comfortable calling people you don't know; have to have a thick enough skin to realize that its not personal when a candidate turns you down; you have to know when to push and when to back down (this was actually given to me as a compliment by our COO); you have to be creative; sometimes you have to be patient and sometimes you need to be a real go-getter; and you have to be a salesman and an excellent listener to learn what motivates the candidates.
