Job Responsibilities
Virtual and on-site Technical Recruiter/Researcher for a Technical Solution firm. Full-desk Recruiter for staff-level & above technical professionals researching, sourcing, networking, pre- screening/qualifying & conducting reference checks. Work closely with all Hiring Managers and Human Resource Professionals providing quality full-service placement services and workforce solutions while maintaining a strong sense of urgency. Negotiate compensation packages with candidates and placement fees with client companies.
Job Requirements
Most Recruiters have at least an undergraduate degree, preferably in Business Administration, Marketing, or Human Resources. Most firms have a training period within your 1st week or 1st year. The training is usually internal lasting for one to two weeks long. Employees are taught how to source for candidates, referrals and sales leads. They receive the basics for the firm's internal Documentation/Recruiting Database as well as general HR rules and "what you can and cannot say."
Uppers
Unlimited commission potential is a nice incentive. There is money to be made; you have got to be willing to go out there and get it. Compensation is usually salary plus commission per placement. My contract placement fee is $1,000 per hire after employee has been on the job for at least 30 days. You do not have to make up your base-salary in billing before receiving commission, no draw. All benefits paid by company or whole family. You are privy to market trends and some cool companies on the cutting-edge of technology. You learn a lot about people and what motivates them.
Downers
May need to rely on an inexperienced salesperson for feedback and account management. Some employees require babysitting regarding basics like when to turn in timecards and how to get paid. Lots of whining calls about co-worker "So-N-So was mean to me today." Industry can turn on a dime, so diversify your services or expand into bear-friendly industry.
Lifestyle
Core work hours are 8:30 AM through 5:00PM, and then you are expected to prepare candidates for their next- day interviews as well as source new candidates at night up for a good 2 hours or so. No traveling at this consulting firm. Dress is business casual with jeans on Fridays. I hang a suit on the back of my office door in case I have to go to a client site. We have one formal party each year inviting all employees + significant, current client company managers, and new and prospective technical candidates and client companies contacts.
Compensation
$60,000 Base salary + $750.00 - $1,000 per hire, contract or full- time direct placements. Staff level and above Technical openings can be managed at five to six placements per month. Health benefits are paid for by the comany for all of immediate family. 401k, while not matching, starting on your first date of employment.
Advice to Jobseekers
Recruiting and Staffing Solutions are highly competitive; and there is a major burnout factor. Day is filled on the phone, consistant documentation via email and scheduled client-site visits. Develop a network of good recruiters, candidates, and hiring managers. Give, Give, Give and find others who will reciprocate. Keep your Hotsheet updated and stay in touch with past hires and weekly networking activities. Technology trends and innovations must be kept up. You may question some unethical practices, and you should. Lots of office politics to ignore. Outlook or the future has changed so much with outsourcing overseas and the interal managed staffing gatekeepers. Remember that you are providing a service. You are not "selling" anything here, hiring managers are to be respected, not feared. This job in not brain surgery. You are simply presenting job opportunities to people who may need a job. Outlook is good, if not great. We all need that personal touch.
