Job Responsibilities
As a system administrator the responsibilities included are supporting clients via a ticket system queue. They are answered in the order they are submitted. You are also responsible for maintaining the web hosting servers where clients are hosted. The shifts are 8 hours days, 40 hours a week plus randomly scheduled weekend hours.
Job Requirements
There are no education requirements for the job. The position requires basic knowledge of computers, networking, and the ability to provide customer support. Experiance is a plus.
Uppers
This job can be worked from home or anywhere else with internet access and a computer with a web browser and email software. They require that all employees be present on the company IRC chat server as well. You have the freedom of a boss not looking over your shoulder, but they do track performance in other ways. They have trouble keeping employees on their technical staff, so they are always looking for more people. They are understaffed currently and are making up for this by scheduling their current employees to work overtime.
Downers
The hours are horrible, and the pay is not worth the sacrifices you will make for this job. The pay is salary, and there is no gartuntee you will be paid for any overtime. The management of this company has little care for their technical staff and treats them poorly. The management team, including the owners of this company are irrisponsible, immiture, and stubborn young adults. It is very difficult to get ahold of someone in the event of a major problem. There are no benifits, and there are no pay raises.
Lifestyle
You will be working 40+ hours a week as a system administrator for Site5. If they feel that the department is running behind they will schedule all shifts to stay extra hours on the fly giving no advanced notice. You will be scheduled for weekend hours with only a few days notice as well. There is no vacation time or "sick days" included with the position. You can request a day off in advance, or call out sick and this is usually not a problem. However, you will not be paid for missed time even though your pay is salary.
Compensation
The base salary for this job is $3,000 US a month. There are no bonuses, chance of raise, or benifits. You will also feel very little job security working for this company unless you are appointed a management position.
Advice to Jobseekers
I would suggest that you find a employer that treats you well. The web hosting market is a brutal one, and it will be difficult to find one that makes you happy. The clients, employers, and employees in this field are generally miserable people due to the amount of stress that is placed on them all by eachother. The small web hosting companies rarely run smooth, and focus on keeping clients happy, and total disreguard for the staff that keeps it running for them. From what I have learned from working in this field over the past 5 years is that the majority of web hosting providers create their own barriers and prevent themselves, their employees, and their clients from being successful and/or happy. There are a handful of wonderful web hosting employers out there, but they are very hard to get into.
