Job Responsibilities
I decided to go back to university last year; therefore I do not work for this company at the moment. My decision was based on my constant desire of learning. But I'm sure that my past experience could still help this survey. I worked as a service technician for a company who mainly operate in the industrial robotic field (integrator to be more precise). Once the project is sold to a specific customer and the engineering is done, that??s where my job starts. At first we all sit together, because yes I don??t work alone! We determine components required for the project and we do all the purchases. This process takes usually one day depending on the size of the project. We first start by assembling the robotic safety guards than position the robot. Than we install the mechanical safety devices, worktables and tool holders. Simultaneously the wiring for robot hand and other electronics components are assembled. I would say, overall it takes about two weeks with a team of 2-3. Final step was to program the robot for the customer needs. Depending on the complexity of the project that is the longest part, but also the most interesting one. Once the robotic cell is final and meets all the safety requirements and testing, we invite the customer to see in action is robot in our facilities. When the customer is satisfied, we ship the project and install it at his facilities. Then over the following months and years we offer customer support service. One day is never the same so it would be hard to give a very specific job description. We sometimes switch roles in the team in order to diversifies and learn. We each have our specialty mind is robot programming and mechanical assembly. The normal working week is 40 hours but sometimes specially during rush period and tight deadlines it could go up to 50 hours a week.
Job Requirements
My education started in the armed forces; I graduated from military school with a mechanical engineering course (3 years). This course touched everything from physics, maths, machining, welding and many more. After the completion of my military service 7 years overall I started to work in this industry. At first my employer sends me on different specialty robotic course like programming, maintenance and many more. But the best school will always be the hands on the job! I have to say that having the military experience in your resume really helped finding this job.
Uppers
Like I explain in # 1 a working day is never the same I consider it has an upper for this job. It's also a very challenging and rewarding job from my point of view. Working with high tech toys (figure of speech) overwhelms me every times we finish a project an the customer is satisfied.
Downers
Unfortunately, like many other job this one is not perfect. The biggest downer is sometimes you have to travel to a customer facility on a very short notice. And dealing with impatient customer is hard sometime.
Lifestyle
It's a very demanding domain but it??s worth it if you are looking for a high tech challenge. You most expect to travel a lot and expect to be away from home. But if you are like me, it is one of the reasons why I like the job.
Compensation
My base salary when I started was in the range of 35000-38000$ Can. The yearly increase was about 7-8%. All travel expense was paid for.
