Job Responsibilities
Meeting with insurance agents and communicating with them the reasons to sell my products over my competitors'. i train them on changes to our product, technology and services and help them find more effective ways to sell the value of our products. I research competitor information and report it back to my superiors. I account for my day through "call notes," and must have at least 5-6 calls per day. I write a monthly report at the end of the month and am responsible for increasing sales in my territory.
Job Requirements
I have a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field. I have worked in the insurance industry for years and moved into this position laterally. I have taken designation courses such as CIC and also received my insurance agent's license for the state, although it was not required at the time.
Uppers
The company is cutting edge and the people within the company are smart, nice, and interesting. There is always something new going on.
Downers
Client complaints. Some are valid, but most are just redundant.
Lifestyle
Long hours. We in sales attend some industry events which require an annual stay at the beach; however, most travel is to other company locations for training. We don't do much socially except around meetings or someone's birthday. I don't see the other members of the sales team much except at quarterly meetings or talk to them by phone. Dress is corporate but I rarely wear a suit because most of my clients are casual.
Compensation
Benefits are pretty good and salary is commensurate with experience. They do studies to determine if they are within the norm for the job type for all areas of the country to be competitive. There is a chance for bonus based on if the company, nationally and locally, meets goals.
Advice to Jobseekers
It is usually pretty secure but insurance companies are notorious lately for mergers, acquisitions and overall reorganization. My advice is to find what you like and do it - you'll be able to track it down at one company or another, especially if you like sales.
