Job Requirements
Minimum Qualification is a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical
Engineering with good overall Educational performance. Post
graduates get an added edge. Strong knowledge of Mechanical
Engineering fundamentals is a must. Knowledge of CAD tools and
specific mechanical domain (Aerospace, Automotive, Tooling, Jigs
and Fixtures..) is an added advantage.

Uppers
The best part of being in this industry is the exposure to the various fields of
Mechanical Engineering. Onsite you get to work with various OEM's giving you an
insight into the working culture of various industries related to Mechanical
Engineering. The learning curve is very high, not giving you the feel of
monotony. Exposure to various Mechanical Engineering standards, be it for design,
drawing, testing is an added advantage in this field. Insight into various domain
is also achieved - be it Aerospace, Automotive, Heavy Engineering, Tooling,
Consumer Products....
Direct Client interface is another advantage in this field, helping you improve
your communication and leadership skills.

Downers
This field in particular, you are 'Jack of all, Master of none'.
This is a downer as this hinders your chances of working in a
particular domain. The so called DOMAIN expertise cannot be
obtained, because your exposed to the domain only for the
project related topics. At times, you need to be working in some
low-end jobs too.
Work can be pressurising at times.
|
Lifestyle
Work hours are mostly flexible. At times you end up working for nearly 10-12hrs
a day, working on Saturdays and Sundays too without being monetarily compensated.
But then there are Compensatory Holidays to cover these up. Most Onsite
assignments may vary between 6 months to 1 year depending on the Project
requirements. Onsite responsibilities are from both India and Western Contries.
No imposed Dress code, but preferably in formal throughout the week, with
casuals on the weekend. Yearly outings are usually the norm of this industry.
|
Compensation
Compensation usually varies between individuals. This is because
in this field for a particular no. of years of experience, there
are candidates who possess knowledge of more than 1 CAD/CAE
tool, exposure to more than 1 domain......So the best mix gets
the best compensation. Usually for a fresher, offered a job in
an established firm can get a compensation anywhere between Rs.
1,50,000 to Rs.2,50,000 p.a. The compensation for experienced
professionals is mainly based on their previous compensations.
The offer could be anywhere in the range of 1.2% to 1.5% of
their previous salary based on the candidates expertise.

Advice to Jobseekers
The best field for freshers, because the get the feel of the
entire industry. It is always adviseable for a freher to learn
atleast one CAD tool and one Analysis tool. Knowledge of more
than one tool is an added advantage.
