Job Responsibilities
Manage advertising inventory of a recently re-launched, well- branded web site; sell advertising to offset the cost of operating the web site; cold-calling; prospecting, marketing research (competitive, industry trends, vertical market stats, advertising outlook, technology trends, etc.); initiate, develop and grow business partnerships (internally & externally) to produce successful, measurable advertising campaigns; forecast and manage online advertising revenue, budget and inventory; develop saleable sponsorship programs and all sales collateral; work with production team to deliver campaigns; provide feedback and consultation to production, marketing and corporate technology teams in order to maintain a competitive online offering.
Job Requirements
Knowledge and management of top industry brands; marketing concepts, advertising strategies, direct marketing (lingo, numbers, formulas, etc.); goals and objectives for product promotion and effective media programs for sponsorship; analysis, research, statistics, mass media, targeting, technologies, philosophy, advanced mathematics, economics...
Uppers
It's all about energy and everyone is still learning; the internet is ever-evolving and technology has JUST begun to pick up momentum in the personal technology market.
Downers
It's all about finding "like-minds"... to partner and grow with. most of the time you find yourself paired with people who move to a different rhythm or are driven by opposite things or have very different approach to the business than you... and your job eventually becomes much less enjoyable because you can't find the right channels to plug in all of your skills and experience... you just have to determine what you want out of life, what you want from yourself, and what you think you can get... everything is a compromise.
Lifestyle
Work hours are anywhere from 7-15 hour days, depending on the job, company, and role. if you want to excel, be ready to work your tail off... dress professionally - it's the only way that people take you seriously. be confident and be honest. your reputation follows you especially when you work with so many people... from sales, to production, to operations, to engineering, to the executives of your company and those of your clients.
Compensation
$75K base, plus commission and bonus with a 20% cap (base). benefits vary from company to company... small companies or very large corporations who are penny-pinchers definitely do not have as many benefits for employees. large companies who want the reputation of being "family-focused" and a "great place to work" will have all the bells and whistles... to the point where it's almost ridiculous. i've now been at both ends of the spectra... and prefer more in my (higher compensation, less benefits) pocket than all the wonderful corporate benefits... the latter is never "fair" and customized enough to your own liking, so why bother?
Advice to Jobseekers
Overload on classes to intentionally put on the pressure; this will only prepare you for the fast-pace of media and technology; be savvy for all types information because everything is relevant and nothing in this space happens in a vacuum. Find a professor or mentor who is influential in his/her specialty... and offer to dedicate your time and effort to be an incredibly enthusiastic sponge for the knowledge that they are willing to share, grow and pour on you.
