Job Responsibilities
I promote and sell medical equipment and services. I am only required to work from 8-5, but there is always something that could be done after hours. My job requires that I market to physician's offices, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and the general public. This entails bringing in lunch, candy, marketing materials for the office, and hoping that the person responsible for referrals (often a nurse or the doctor) will meet with you (you rarely meet with the doctor unless you have furnished lunch). I spend a lot of time producing my own marketing materials, planning special events for the public (such as BINGO events for senior citizens), and addressing patient problems or concerns.
Job Requirements
I, personally, have a undergrad degree in an unrelated field, so I am not a good source to attest to any specific educational requirements. I would say that it would be very helpful to have experience or knowledge of medicine, science, and insurance. You have to be an outgoing person, with a professional apperance, good communication skills, and natural "sales" abilities (persuasivness, enthusiasm, determination, self motivation, etc..).
Uppers
You often work independently... free of supervision and restriction. You are able to interact with a variety of people, daily. You can be creative with your approach.
Downers
It can be lonely and hard to stay focused when working by yourself all day. Much of your success depends upon customer service, so you can sell your heart out and have them drop the ball. It can be difficult to get in front of the key decision makers, especially when you enter an office on a busy day (which is most days). The amount of daily travel can be hard on your vehicle.
Lifestyle
Dress is business casual, but sometimes includes suits, etc. You always need to maintain a well-kept apperance. I work a pretty normal 8-5 day with a lunch hour. I only travel once a month to our corporate headquarters for meetings. My territory includes a 60 miles radius, so I travel within that area.
Compensation
They started me out at 25k and I am given a monthly comission on sales (which has been no more than $1,000/month...yet). There is potential in some territories to make a lot more. The benefits include medical, dental, life, and optional 401k. You are reinbursed for expenses and paid mileage monthly.
Advice to Jobseekers
Learn as much as you can about your products, how the medical field works (insurance guidelines, basic health terms and vocabulary, legal regulations and requirements, etc..), and sales techniques. I have found that the most effective sales approach I have had is to ask a lot of questions and than let the "referral source" lead your pitch. If you are a "people person," be prepared that the job can be very lonely. While you do meet many people, it is 5 minutes "on", back in the car, 5 minutes "on", back in the car....much of your time is spent in your car...alone! Good luck to all job searchers!
