Job Responsibilities
Customer sevice, first and foremost. Most people don't just come for a cup of coffee. Maybe the first time or two, but if you make friends with them they're going to come back for you and the great service. Even if you mess up their order every now and again. I do a lot of multi tasking. Taking orders, making drinks in the order of which I took. Cleaning up after myself. Keeping things stocked and orderly. I spend about 2 hours each day just stocking. Stocking pasteries for the next day. Keeping our fridge full of milk; 5 different kinds. Making sure there is plenty of Frappuccino base for me and the person coming when I'm off. Coffee for brewing. I could go on and on. Lids, cups, straws, napkins, sugar. I spend about 3 hours every day cleaning. Draining and scrubbing the sinks. Keeping the coffee pots rinsed and stain free. Pulling all products out of both fridges and washing racks and wiping down inside and out. I wash a lot of dishes. Sweep up coffee crumbs, wipe up spills. Dust display shelves and machines. Take out garbage. Wipe down seating area. Wipe down cream and sugar area. Lots of doing the same over and over. It's easy. Not for every one though. Some poeple are messy and don't care how things look. I think things should look great and be in order at all times even when your busy. Wish everyone worked as hard as me;
Job Requirements
1 week Safeway register trainging. Lots of hours sitting at the computer learning lessons and taking quizes. Easy. I had no prior experience. Other than waitressing which I don't think made a difference. 40 hours of Starbucks training. Learing about the history and making process of their delicious coffee. Studying call names on drinks and their abbreviations. Learning how to make a great foam to go on the lattes. Lots of sampling. Yum yum. Took lots of notes in a book they provided and took a written test at the end of the week. Then got tested on my abbilities as a barista. They give a drug test upon hiring and require immediate drug test if there is an injury on the job.
Uppers
The customers and my co-workers. I've made some great friends. People I probably wouldn't talk to or get to know otherwise. Older people. Younger people. Different ethnic backgrounds. No matter what store I was in or my position I'm sure I'd love my job just the same. I enjoy being a coffee bartender. I think it's fun and I take pride in giving my friends/customers quality drinks.
Downers
Working with lazy people who have bad customer service skills and no pride in their work.
Lifestyle
It's a great lifestyle. I feel like a part of a family. My work hours are most flexible. I have the opportunity to work at other safeway locations. Whether it be just for a day or I transfer permanately. I wear black pants with the option for Khakis. I wear a black polo shirt with the option for white and the choice of dress or polo. I wear black shoes and a apron which they provide. I have to either wear a visor or hat or hair net over my pony.
Compensation
I started at $.10 above minimum. I get a raise after so many hours I've put in. I have great health benefits with dental and eye optional. I have 401k they match what I put in. I have retirement. Long term disability. I get sick time and floater days for every so many hours I put in. I get birthday and holiday pay even if I don't work. If I do work I get my pay plus time and half!
Advice to Jobseekers
Go for it. It's great for all poeple. Students. Parents. Elderly. Handicapped. Safeway wants you. They want to make you part of the family. They'll give you great training and great. opportunity to move up in the business.
