Job Responsibilities
You are dealings with people's money, so making sure that everything is all right and you have the right paper work is almost as essential as the responsabilities you have. So filing is a must and it takes 1 hour (daily) You do a little bit of everything. You deal with customer's queries, from a simple balance information to how to do an international transfer. You help customers to transfer between their own accounts, between banks or abroad. You do some cashiering, you try to help people to get the right account for their needs, and you keep a close look to avoid any kind of fraud. You do not normally allocate a particular time of the day to do a specific task, since most of the work is done as it gets to your hands, or at least it should be. Most of the time things cannot wait till tomorrow.
Job Requirements
The attitude is the most important thing. Obviously, having a Business/Economics degree help to a quicker promotion, but it is not necessary. O levels is enough to start cashiering. They provide all the necessary training.
Uppers
Talking to people, helping them to make the most of their money. Bonuses
Downers
When you cannot help, and you see your customer really trying get out from the hole. The burocracy (ok, it is necessary, but that does not mean that it is funny!). Targets
Lifestyle
It is a 9 to 5 work, but to get things right you start at 8:30 or 9:45. The uniform is provided by the bank. In general, there is not travelling unless you are a Business Manager or in a Executive position. The bank organises quite one or two social meetings for the region each year. It also rewards to the best employees with a paid week holiday each year. Some branches orginize their own social meetings from time to time, so the people get to know each other.
Compensation
Base salary is not really high. Depending on the type of job, it might go as low as 12,000 GBP. Still, they will give a pension plna, discounts in numerous stores and shop, including groceries, etc. A support group for whatever you may need (if you need to talk to someone because you are stressed, if you need a babysitter, if you think your security is threaten) You also have bonuses based on performance that can go quite high.
Advice to Jobseekers
It is basically about service, and providing good service is quite hard. It is not hard to do but it takes quite a bit of diplomacy and tact. It can be very fun if you like your customers.
