Job Responsibilities
When I was wit RR I was involved in developing ideas to increase the efficiency and performance of jet engines. This was a full time all-day job.
Job Requirements
I won a scholarship to Oxford university in the UK from a Grammar school in a country town. The quality of the lectures which I attended was first class. The rally valuable part was the hour each week spent face to face with a tutor - one to one. I value this more and more as time goes by. The aim was to help me learn how to think. I was recruited from University by RR to do a graduate apprenticeship which was two years in length. This had an academic side in that we had to prepare a paper to be read to the other apprentices about once a month. Otherwise it was very "hand-on" with specific real-life problems to work on in the different departments that I went through. I was involved for instance in the measuring of the bending of the shafts inside and engine as it acceperated, designing the equipment and specifying how it should be used. Or designing a computer for the on-line testing of engines - in 1963, early days. It was an experience which I value to this day, the responsibility and the bredth of experiences were invaluable.
Uppers
Being able to take initiative. Think for oneself.
Downers
Days were not lopng enough to fit in all that one wanted to do.
Lifestyle
What is your passion?
Compensation
Salary was not fantastic though I believe it is better now. Then we got less than out contemporaries in class rooms.
