Job Responsibilities
Supervizing students in High School classes 5 days a week for 35 hours. Replacing teachers in their absence during this time. Teaching History of Western Philosophy for 90 hour course.
Job Requirements
In replacing teachers I administer lesson plans, keep students on task, provide guidance to students on subject matter which varies. I may replace any subject in High school and may be required to correct papers and students work and log all absentees and other administrative requirements. The western philosophy course which I teach is to Mexican international students. I prepare, grade and teach the content, training students to think for themselves and philosophize. They come from Mexican private schools and range from 16 to 18 yrs of age.
Uppers
Receiveing the rare receptive student who enjoys the content and has demonstrated insight and illumination in thought over the period of the course. Also the itinerancy as a substitute teacher and the class content variety.
Downers
The pay is poor and work is temporary. Good classes and good content or subject matter is also scarce. I like to teach those students who are teachable.
Lifestyle
Dress is casual depending on the school. There are no restrictions on race and intelligence, all school age children will have a place in the schools, even the most severally handicapped who may make up the special education program, and even unwed teenagers are accommodated in special programming and child care. A fulltime teacher will be working a good 50 to 60 hour weeks in the first 2 years as he or she establishes a good understanding and assignment and grading documentation that cover the curriculum content for his or her teaching subject. The same will go for extracurricular participation.
Compensation
A substitute teacher receives no benefits other than some pension benefits and unemployment insurance. The substitute is not on contract perse. A contracted teacher will receive dental, life, unemployment, diability insurance and a range of pay betweeen $30,000 and $70,000 a year depending on seniority, years in service and educational level.
Advice to Jobseekers
Job outlook is very good, however one needs to make sure that their personality profile fits the industry demands on teachers. To test this, the best thing to do is to take on some lower position as an aid in a school, and see if you are designed for that type of employment and check out each and every school you may be interested in for its particular cultural bent. Each school is as different as apple and oranges. Mke sure which level you are suited for regardless of sense of expertise, and whether you love children or love content. If you are children lover, the level may not matter, nor the content. But if content is important and you want to specialize, High school, senior years or college or univeristy would be the way to go.
